Benin-born guitarist Lionel Loueke combines American jazz traditions with sounds of West Africa. Called a “gentle virtuoso” by New York Times critic Jon Pareles, Loueke has woven African folk forms into complex harmonies and distinctive melodies for bands led by artists like Terence Blanchard and Herbie Hancock. On his 2012 album Heritage, Loueke enhances his eclectic sounds with Derrick Hodge on electric bass and Mark Guiliana on drums. Both Hodge and Guiliana will join him at MOCA Cleveland for this performance.
