Job objective
The Security Officer supports the operational functionality, safety, and security of the museum’s physical environment. Key responsibilities include monitoring facility operations, supporting administrative and gallery activities, and ensuring exhibitions and daily operations run securely. This role maintains familiarity with current Engagement practices to provide additional support for this department as needed.
Essential duties &
responsibilities
Security Officer on Duty
● Serve in the capacity of Security Officer on Duty, maintaining a visible and proactive presence to ensure the safety and security of the facility, artwork, and occupants.
● Perform opening and closing security inspections and operate monitoring equipment at the security desk to supervise building activity, manage deliveries, and maintain a secure environment.
● Manage access control by issuing keys and access cards to staff, vendors, and contractors while supervising administrative guest entry and ensuring adherence to access protocols.
● Maintain awareness of facility operations, promptly address security breaches, take appropriate actions, and log/report incidents.
● Supervise gallery activities and indirectly oversee Engagement Guides to ensure the safety of visitors, staff, and artwork.
Engagement Support
● Be prepared to initiate and lead interaction with diverse museum visitors using question-based, art object-focused, developmentally appropriate methods about new, frequently changing material, ideas, and exhibitions.
● Provide additional gallery, event, and Welcome Center support when needed.
● Perform Welcome Center operations, including visitor introduction and wayfinding, demographic recording, and admission and merchandise point of sale.
● Communicate daily operations to Engagement Guides and perform other Engagement-oriented tasks as needed and directed by the Visitor Experience Manager.
● Act as Engagement Guide team lead when designated by Visitor Experience Manager.

Minimum
qualifications
● Education: High School Diploma (or equivalent) required.
● Experience: 1-2 years of security experience, museum experience preferred; prior experience managing facilities or safety programs a plus.

● Relationship Management: Builds relationships and collaborates effectively, provides basic coaching and support to direct reports, and demonstrates willingness to learn and adapt to new management responsibilities.
● Reliability: Reliably fulfills obligations, consistently meets or exceeds deadlines, and proactively contributes to refining and improving established policies and procedures.
● Tech & Tools: Uses computer systems and programs (i.e., Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and/or role-specific technology) with competency and efficiency.
● Writing/Editing: Possesses beginner business writing skills - drafts coherent content, makes edits for punctuation and spelling, and uses a professional style and tone.
Physical Demands
● Sitting (continuously), standing (occasionally), and moving among various areas of the facility (occasionally).
● Listening and exchanging information in-person, by phone, and computer (frequently).
● Lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds (occasionally).
● Using hands for simple & power grasping, pushing & pulling, and fine manipulation (continuously).
● Operating a computer and keyboarding (continuously).
● Reaching above shoulder level, at waist level, and below waist level (occasionally).
● Bending (waist level), twisting (waist level), squatting, kneeling, and balancing (occasionally).
● Climbing stairs (frequently) and/or ladders (occasionally).
Work Environment
● Office Space: Stationed at the security desk on the ground floor of the building, near the staff and delivery entrance.
● Schedule: Frequently required to work evenings and/or weekends.
